DESTINATION: Aeolian Islands
LOCATION: Stromboli

Stromboli

While most people see Stromboli and its volcanic plume from afar, it isn’t always the most visited of Italy’s seven Aeolian Islands due to its remoteness and difficulty anchoring near it. While we were nearby there was a large explosion that shook the island, killing an Italian hiker and causing 70 people to be evacuated.

It is one of the most scenic to sail by, but we made sure we didn’t get too close for safety reasons. Saying that though, over 300 Italians make this island their home.

Due to the large thermal updrafts, Stromboli can also influence the local weather patterns and huge cumulus and electrical storms can gather in the area.

Stromboli: The Active Aeolian

Mount Stromboli on the top of the island has 3 active craters and has been spewing lava for the last 200 years. It is one of the four active volcanoes in Italy north of Sicily. At night it is easy to see the glowing lava at its top from not too far away.

Even though it is active, there are still hiking trails to the top, but be careful!
