DESTINATION: Aeolian Islands
LOCATION: Salina

Salina Sulphur

From Lipari we set sail for Salina. On the way there seemed to be many pumice factories along the north eastern Lipari coastline that seem to have been abandoned and deserted. They would have been so fun to explore if we had had the time!

Great clouds of sulphur could be seen on the mountain tops on the northern coast. These islands were very mush still active!

Arrived and got great holding in sand and weed at Punta Lingua just off a swim beach. Nice little village with a lot of Saturday afternoon boat traffic. No wind so we had to again motor all the way.

Took the dinghy ashore and to the village and visited a restored lighthouse. Karin took me to Gambiro Restaurant for a nice birthday treat. Very kind of her and a nice dinner out. While walking around outside the restaurant we saw another boat that seemed to have run ground and was listing heavily to stern. This however proved to be a fresh water delivery boat and it was pumping fresh water ashore from holding tanks to supply the local populace.

Lovely cool evening to walk the quay and we came across soothing sounds coming from a church. Two clarinets and a piano in concert. Very cool considering the location.

The next day when rinsing a coffee press off the back of the boat there was a loud splash! Nooooooooo! Karins iPhone had fallen out of her armband over the side in 15m of water. Luckily I had scuba gear on board, so suited up and dove to try and find it. Unlucky though, there was a lot of Posidonia weed and it was impossible to find it. At that depth it probably imploded anyway 🙁

Found a micro fiber and small fishing rod while diving instead of the iphone.

Sarah and Nick tried calling me on my birthday but reception was bad and they were missed.

Setting Sail for Salina

Salina with its fresh water springs, is the greenest island of Aeolian archipelago. Its diverse climate with millennia-old olive groves, prickly pear cactus, vineyards and typical Mediterranean vegetation means the fertile island produces tons of capers, chestnuts, a high-quality low-acid olive oil and more. It is claimed that Salina produces the best capers in the world and during the first weekend of June there is an annual caper festival.

Salina has six volcanoes though they are barely visible to the eye. The most recent eruption on Salina occurred on the western part of the island about 13,000 years ago and formed a semi-circular crater.
