ARC+: Day 16 – Big Waves

Huge waves and very rolly. Blowing 26 to 30 on our back. As we are going directly downwind there is an elevated chance of crash gybing which has occurred a couple of times (our boom brake worked perfectly both times to slow it). Wave height is just over our first spreader (~40ft). When we are in the troughs you think the ocean is about to swallow you. When the wave passes under you the boat is high in the sky on top of the world and you can see for many many miles. Hand steering is best as the waves are too much for the auto pilot.

Just in from fleet news…

“Early this morning, the crew of ALIKA experienced a sudden loss of steering which caused the yacht to move in an abrupt motion. During this episode, injuries were sustained to 2 adult crew members. One crew member has an open fracture of the ankle and the other has a concussion. They issued a PAN PAN via VHF and required evacuation for professional medical assistance.

The ARC+ yachts ALEXANDRA and ONE PIECE have been standing by ALIKA during the day.

MRCCs are now coordinating the evacuation of the casualties to a suitable alternative vessel with appropriate facilities to provide access to professional medical assistance.”

We will be reducing sail area tonight and prioritizing comfort over speed.

Two more days of forecasted big and rolly seas.

It’s starting to get real out here.
