Mellowing in Mallorca

We’re heading to Mallorca from Mahon (Minorca), expected it to take 11 hours. We motored out of channel very early from Mahon and avoided a very large cargo ship docking side on. It was very early in the morning pre dawn, and the sun was just coming up. A beautiful sunrise at the mouth of the harbor bathed a striped lighthouse in orange as we rounded the southern coast with 1 knot of current and calm water. We managed to sail with a full sail for about 20 minutes, but the wind died and we had to motor the rest of the way. Huge thunder and lightning storm with plenty of rain as we approached Mallorca directly in our path to the marina.

Not sure how to get into marina as lightning strikes were happening every 30 seconds or so all over the island. The closer we got the more of a chance we would be struck by one of them. We saw a small gap down one side of the harbor that was clear of bad weather and went for it. Still in rain and not getting struck by lightning we arrived at 1538 on 235 engine hours and filled with 28 liters of diesel. Fantastic marina!

Fanciest marina with toilets and showers all electronic and motion detected. Water was €30 card kept as a deposit and we washed TUI down and put up the big tent to over the boat to rest in the shade. Cocktails at Aqua restaurant with a nice sunset.

Mellowing in Mallorca

Fact: The Balearic Islands were first colonized by humans around 2500–2300 BC from the Iberian Peninsula or southern France that resulted in the rapid extinction of the three species of terrestrial mammals native to Mallorca, a dwarf goat-antelope, a giant doormouse, and a shrew, all three of which had been continuously present on Mallorca for over 5 million years!
