From Bonifacio to Minorca will be a long trip. Based on the last fuel use, we use about 4.4 liters of diesel per hour in HEAVYÂ weather conditions. We have a 210 liter fuel tank, which gives us 47 hours of motoring in heavy seas. We had less than 4 foot waves the whole way and tried to fly the gennaker sail but there was not enough wind to keep it full.
After midnight, we had strange depth readings of 36 meters death to 48 meters all the way yet the depth on the chart plotter showed 2700 meters of water should be under us. What the heck was going on? We had a real reading of only 36 meters to 48 meters, and then would drop off to max depths. Was it schools of squid? Dolphins? A submarine shadowing us? Went on from midnight to approx 0400 in the morning. Very strange, very weird.
We spotted a school of short beaked common dolphins 2 to 2 ½ meters long, about eight of them. Great to watch.
Beautiful sunrise and arrived on the 25th of August arriving at the Mahon fuel dock at 1428.
The Mahon is a nice place. There was a very large harbor and a lot of classic boats taking part in a special vintage boat rally when we arrived. Managed to get a stainless steel bracket adaptor for the life raft made for €200 and screws cut for the lee boards to stop crew rolling out of their beds while heeled and underway.
We were also missing a leash for the new life raft but managed to get it delivered to John back in the US who was going to join us in Gibraltar to bring over with us so we could then mount the new life raft in Gibraltar.
Making our way to Minorca!
Menorca has long been regarded as the quietest of the three islands that make up the Spanish Balearics, but while we were there it was quite busy with the King’s Cup for Classic Yachts in the Port of Mahon – Mahon is the capital of Menorca – ideally suited for sailing and one of the world’s best known deep water harbors.
The Classic Yachts Weekend includes three different classes of boat. Vintage yachts, which were launched before 1949, Classic Yachts that were built before 1975, and at the organisers’ discretion Spirit of Tradition Yachts.
