We left Isola Budelli and made our way to Bonifacio on the southern tip of Corsica. It was forecasted to be 10 knots of wind but we had over 25 knots on the bow with big waves. Had to hand steer the last half of the way there and arrived at 1205 at the harbor entrance. We were wondering what we were getting ourselves into as boats coming out were swaying like crazy back and forth with healing in the extreme. Huge waves and swell near the entrance, with bright orange port authority emergency ribs patrolling the area with guys in full survival suits. What the heck??? Where they there to aid vessels in distress and pick up anyone who fell off their deck.
We didn’t know what was happening to the north west of us otherwise we may have turned around.
We motored into the entrance and was greeted with very calm waters to the entrance of Bonifacio and after heading up a channel, a beautiful marina and seaside village. We had made it! Marineros raised on channel 9 and got a nice Med Moored with easy lines.
You can usually only stay a single night in Bonifacio as it is such a popular place and you didn’t even bother to try and stay longer as you would always be told ‘no’, but when we got there it was about a third empty. Huh?
When we checked in we had no problems making a reservation for 3 days. Lucky us!
DESTINATION: Bonifacio!
The southern coast around Bonifacio is an outcrop of chalk-white limestone. The port of Bonifacio is placed on the Bay of Bonifacio, a mini fjord filled with seawater with a little peninsula 1,500 meters and 200 meters wide. In prehistoric the islands of Sardinia and Corsica were connected. The depth of the harbor is about 11ft so all but the largest superyachts can easily enter..
Bonifacio is split into two sections. The vieille ville (old town), or la Haute Ville (the Upper city) where the castle is located on the peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
