Left Marmari Beach for Methoni departing at 0615 very early in the day before the wind picked up. We have to take into account katabatic winds, and not just regular winds and gusts, leaving Mamari Beach. We had 40 knots of catabatic and too much sail up when we left furling the genoa with that much wind. Stainless shoe on arch that holds the bimini on popped out and had to lash it down. Arrive Methoni 1245 very tired as winds had died down halfway there and we had to motor the rest of the way. Very high winds on arrival and we saw a smaller sailboat with a bust forestay and raked mast tilting way back to stern getting blown out to sea from the Methoni harbor. Luckily a powerboat provided assistance that went out with people on board and helped drop the flogging jib. jib. Michael checked all arch fittings with an Allen wrench and tighten the loose ones. Fitted snubber for first time.
Nice dinner ashore. Great looking castle to explore and harbor to visit. We walked around the outside of the castle with the sun setting and checked out all of the old fishing boats in the cool of the evening. As the wind picked up another large boat started dragging its anchor down on us in the night. All hands to stations! The boys performed superbly and we had the engine on and were ready to raise anchor and move within 6 minutes. After a lot of yelling, the other boat managed to get out of everyone else way and went further out in the harbor to properly set their anchor.
DESTINATION: Methoni!
Methoni has been identified as the city of Pedasus, which Homer mentions under the name “ampeloessa” (of vine leaves), as the last of the seven cities that Agamemnon offers Achilles in order to subdue his rage. Pausanias knew the city as Mothone, named either after the daughter of Oeneus or after the rock Mothon, which protects the harbour, and mentioned a temple to Athena Anemotis there. The Oinoussai complex of islands protected the port of Methoni from the turbulent sea. Along with the rest of Messenia, the town gained its independence from the Spartans in 369 BC.
The Venetian castle that protects the harbor dates back to the 1200s. It lies on a rocky promontory with an arched bridge & an old prison
