When leaving Panarea, we were sandwiched between two squalls large enough to show up on radar. A lot of lightning hitting the island after we had left but luckily none near us. Almost no boats seen motoring north with us. Should we be concerned? Do they know something we didn’t about the weather or conditions?
Heading off from Panarea to Scario we had to deviate to Palinuro. Predictwind shows a great weather window heading northwest so we went for it. With the wind and waves behind us we can sail more than motor and not be bashing all the way with waves on our bow.
Departed at 0713. Though we were originally heading for Scario, we had to change to Palinuro as the wind picked up and was starting to blow against us for 2 hours at 25 to 30 knots. So headed for the bay south of Palinuro (Mare chiaro – Baia del Buondormire) and arrived at 1855. A long day. Beautiful large bay with sand and good holding for teh anchor. Lots of swing room at anchor and a very nice view. Nice sheltered anchorage with castle ruins and umbrellas on the beaches. Lots of caves. Very loud nightclubs over a mile away at night.
Palinuro Pit Stop
Palinuro to the north takes its name from Palinurus, the helmsman of Aeneas, as recorded in the fifth and sixth books of the Aeneid.
