Agios Elena

Trying to finally leave the Meltemis behind in the Cyclades we were bound for the bottom of the Peloponnese peninsula to a small bay called Agios Elena. We tried to depart Milos marina at 0730 to meet a diesel truck at the end of the pier to refuel. Unfortunately we fouled the anchor and tried to maneuver back and forth and had to return to our berth after many attempts trying to free it. Michael snorkeled down and discovered that it had been caught on an old mooring line and managed to free it. We made it to the other dock so the diesel truck could meet us and refuel. We were very late arriving there at 0840.Lesson learned?. If we have room in front of us put out 50 meters of chain over all of the centuries of old mooring lines and debris so that the anchor will not foul on any of it as it is not on top of it. We arrived at Agios Elena Bay at 2015 after departing at 0855. A long day to get out of the Cyclades.

DESTINATION: Agios Elena!

Agios Elena was a very nice anchorage on a sandy bottom.  You can anchor quite far from the beach in 10 m of water and be very quiet and you do not hear any noise We were on the east side of the bay, with room for less boats. There is a bigger bay next to it with more marine traffic and is a lot noisier. The isthmus between both bays is beautiful and if we had more time and didn’t need to get to Sami to pick up the Admiral, we would have stayed a few extra adays here if the weather allowed it!
